| Introduction
Jackson Memorial Hospital and the University of Miami School of Medicine offer the availability of bloodless medicine and surgery as a special service for adult and pediatric patients who wish to avoid blood transfusions. There can be many reasons for this choice. Some people hold a religious conviction that prevents them from receiving transfusions. Others feel more comfortable knowing that they can avoid the risk of blood-born diseases such as hepatitis or HIV. Whatever the reasons behind the individual's convictions, services at the UM/JM Medical Center have long been known for their sensitivity to the beliefs of their multicultural patients. The Center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery makes sure that this particular choice is honored throughout the patient's stay. |
