Dr. Lynn is enthusiastic about the future of bloodless medicine. Although the risks of blood transfusions are decreasing steadily as newer screening tests are introduced and better antiviral processing and storage capabilities evolve, the risks of blood-related transmission of infectious disease is still a problem. Transfusion of blood products can cause serious complications even death and blood products should be considered potentially dangerous drugs. Dr. Lynn also says that awareness of the risk of blood transfusions has sensitized surgeons and forced consideration of alternatives to transfusion.
