Mauricio Lynn, M.D., holds the position of medical director for the Center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center. He is assistant professor of surgery at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center, Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care. His undergraduate work was done at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and his residency at the Tel Aviv University Sackler School of Medicine in Israel. He did his fellowship here at Jackson at the Affiliated Medical Education Program.

Dr. Lynn retired from the Israeli military two years ago after serving for 18 years. His last military appointment was as head of trauma. His clinical and research interests include general and trauma surgery, critical care, bleeding control, hemorrhagic shock and hemostasis.

Dr. Lynn is enthusiastic about the future of bloodless medicine. “Although the risks of blood transfusions are decreasing steadily as newer screening tests are introduced and better antiviral processing and storage capabilities evolve, the risks of blood-related transmission of infectious disease is still a problem. Transfusion of blood products can cause serious complications — even death — and blood products should be considered potentially dangerous drugs.” Dr. Lynn also says that awareness of the risk of blood transfusions has sensitized surgeons and forced consideration of alternatives to transfusion.
